The UNC Charlotte Men’s Rugby Club put together one of the most memorable seasons in program history, finishing the regular season undefeated and showcasing resilience, depth, and championship-level performance from start to finish. Competing in the Southern Conference D1-AA division, the 49ers delivered statement victories, battled top-tier opponents, and climbed the national rankings, reaching as high as No. 8 in the country. Their season was marked not only by dominant wins but also by gritty tests of character that helped shape their championship identity. Early in the campaign, Charlotte demonstrated their defensive toughness in a hard-fought 10–10 draw against the University of South Carolina. The match was a physical chess match from start to finish, with both sides trading blows but neither able to gain decisive control. Charlotte’s defensive organization proved crucial, preventing USC from converting late opportunities. While the contest ended level, it gave the 49ers confidence in their ability to compete with and contain traditionally strong D1 opponents.
Charlotte’s momentum continued with several key victories that defined their season. They earned a gritty 24–15 win over rival NC State through strong defensive stands, followed by a 34–13 victory over D1 opponent Wingate behind standout performances from Cam McKinnon and Mick Keough. The team then delivered a dominant 70–7 win against D1 opponent Lander University, highlighted by captain Wayne Robinson’s four-try performance and a lockdown defensive showing. Even as injuries mounted, the 49ers showed their depth and resolve in the conference championship matchup against Appalachian State. Despite missing several key starters, Charlotte secured a decisive 45–20 win—claiming the program’s first-ever D1-AA Southern Conference Championship and cementing their status as a top 15 team nationally.
Following the championship run, Charlotte added another commanding victory with an 87–13 win over Chapel Hill. The 49ers controlled possession from start to finish, demonstrating their offensive firepower and depth across the roster. Although Charlotte entered the postseason with momentum and lofty ambitions, their playoff run came to a premature end with a difficult loss to the University of Kentucky in the opening round. The defeat was a tough blow for a team that had proven it could compete with the best, but it also served as motivation as the program looks ahead.
With the spring 7s season now on the horizon, the 49ers are reenergized and focused on returning to the national stage. After experiencing both the highs of a conference championship and the sting of an early playoff exit, Charlotte is eager to battle their way back to the national championship game—this time with the goal of finishing the job and capturing the ultimate prize.
