UNC Charlotte Men’s Rugby Clinches First-Ever D1-AA Southern Conference Championship

The UNC Charlotte Men’s Rugby Club capped off a remarkable season by securing the Southern Conference D1-AA Championship, a testament to their resilience, depth, and unwavering determination. Throughout the campaign, Charlotte showed they could rise to the occasion regardless of the opponent or the challenges facing them. Their combination of physicality, discipline, and tactical execution allowed them to outmatch rivals across the conference and beyond.

One of the team’s defining moments came in a gritty battle against long-time rival NC State. In a defensive showcase, Charlotte shut down repeated Wolfpack attacks and capitalized on key scoring opportunities to secure a 24–15 victory. The match highlighted the 49ers’ ability to stay composed under pressure, as their defensive line held firm during crucial stretches to preserve the lead and set the tone for the remainder of the season.

Charlotte carried that momentum into a statement win over Division I opponent Wingate University, earning a 34–13 victory. Led by standout performances from Cam McKinnon and Mick Keough, Charlotte controlled the pace of play from the outset. Their attacking structure clicked seamlessly, with McKinnon and Keough spearheading a dynamic offense that repeatedly broke through Wingate’s defenses and showcased Charlotte’s potential against higher-division competition.

The 49ers’ dominance continued with an explosive 70–7 win over another D1 opponent, Lander University. The team fired on all cylinders, but it was captain Wayne Robinson who stole the spotlight, recording an impressive four tries on the day. Charlotte’s defense was equally commanding, shutting down Lander’s scoring opportunities and demonstrating the squad’s growing confidence and cohesion as championship aspirations came into focus.
By the time Charlotte reached the conference championship match against Appalachian State, injuries had sidelined several key starters. Even so, the depth and determination of the 49ers shone through as they delivered a convincing 45–20 victory to secure the Southern Conference crown—marking the first D1-AA Southern Conference Championship in Charlotte’s history.
